ADC'S POSITION
WITHIN THE INDUSTRY

SPECIALIST RIG INSPECTION COMPANY
Aberdeen Drilling Consultants Ltd. is set apart, as a Specialist Rig Equipment, BOP Equipment, HSE and Cyber systems inspection, survey and technical auditing company with five simple verification questions to be complied with (FARSI):

FUNCTIONALITY
What the equipment is required to do in order to establish and maintain integrity.
AVAILABILITY
The ability of an item to be in a state to perform a required function under given conditions at a given instant of time, or on average over a given time.
RELIABILITY
The probability that the equipment will operate on demand when required to maintain integrity.
SURVIVABILITY The ability of a component, a piece of equipment or a system to remain functional for a specified period when under attack from identified external loading events associated with a major accident.
INTERACTIONS
Interactions and dependencies with other equipment that is critical for functionality.

These all add up, when in compliance, to the Drilling Unit being considered'Fit-for-purpose' for use on operations. These five questions are answered over the areas of Rig Equipment, Blow Out Preventer (BOP) & Well Control, Integrated Controls Systems and HSE to deliver INTEGRATED ASSET ASSURANCE'

INTEGRATED ASSET ASSURANCE proves the rig systems and controls that interact together operate safely and efficiently. ADC not only inspect at component level equipment to assess that the equipment is manufactured, installed and operated as per original equipment functional design but also provides assurance, through witness of system integration testing, that the system operates and attains the operational parameters as per specification. This methodology is derived from the ADC approach to inspect on the basis of verification which is the 5 FARSI points.  Many of these aspects can only be ascertained by experienced inspectors whom have many years in the industry.  ADC is involved in new build rig projects from commissioning all the way through to the commencement of operations providing continuity and professionalism throughout.  The emphasis in all ADC specialist auditing lies with the availability, reliability and fitness– for-purpose of the rig together with the ongoing safety of the crew and the environment.  ADC completes inspections to relevant legislation documents; including Mobile Offshore Drilling Unit (MODU) codes, American Petroleum Institute (API), Classification-Certifying Authorities, (CA) Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) manuals and documents tailored to the unit inspected and the rig location.

CLASSIFICATION SOCIETY
The above is different from the Classification Societies (otherwise known as Classification Societies), such as: Bureau Veritas (BV), Lloyds Register, American Bureau of Shipping (ABS), DNV GL, etc.  The purpose of a Classification Society is to provide classification and statutory services and assistance to the maritime industry and regulatory bodies as regards maritime safety and pollution prevention, based on the accumulation of maritime knowledge and technology.

The objective of ship classification is to verify the structural strength and integrity of essential parts of the ship’s hull and its appendages, and the reliability and function of the propulsion and steering systems, power generation and those other features and auxiliary systems which have been built into the ship in order to maintain essential services on board.  Classification Societies aim to achieve this objective through the development and application of their own Rules and by verifying compliance with international and/or national statutory regulations on behalf of flag Administrations.

However, such a certificate does not imply, and should not be construed as, a warranty of safety, fitness for purpose or seaworthiness of the ship.  It is an attestation only that the vessel is in compliance with the Rules that have been developed and published by the Society issuing the classification certificate.  Further, Classification Societies are not guarantors of safety of life or property at sea or the seaworthiness of a vessel because the Classification Society has no control over how a vessel is manned, operated and maintained between the periodical surveys which it conducts.

THIRD PARTY INSPECTION COMPANY
The deliverable from a Third Party Inspection Company (TPI). It is a business organisation complying with the ISO 17020 standard. TPI’s generally are employed by procurement teams and not drilling and wells teams to inspect very specific points of hardware with focused criteria, such as dimensional control, Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) and thermographic inspection.  Third parties will typically conduct inspections at the stages of pre-production i.e. raw materials, during production i.e. manufacturing procedures, NDT and pre-delivery inspections of finished equipment.

Types of quality inspections.

  • A pre-production inspection tells the buyer which kind of raw materials (or components) will be used.

  • A during production inspection (often called 'DUPRO' in the industry) allows the buyer to have an idea of average product quality, early in the production cycle.
  • The final random inspection (also called 'pre-shipment inspection') is by far the most common type of QC check. It takes place once 100% of shipment quantity is finished and at least 80% is packed, so it can be a real random inspection.

  • The container loading inspection, like the pre-production inspection, it is seldom used.

The chart below illustrates the various disciplines of inspection, their associated responsibilities and referenced legislation and standards.

The four stages of construction, commissioning, acceptance testing and commencement of operations are then overlaid with when the various disciplines of inspection would be conducted by ADC and other inspection providers.  Note:  ADC also conducts witnessing of factory acceptance testing at the equipment construction stage.
